When does a tram have priority in Poland?

2 October 2026 · 5 min read

Warsaw has one of the largest tram networks in Europe. These are the priority rules drivers most often get wrong — also during the WORD exam.

Trams are part of everyday driving in Warsaw — and a frequent reason for failing the practical exam. The rules are simpler than they seem once you know the few key cases.

Equal crossroads

At an intersection without signs or lights a tram has priority over other vehicles, even when coming from your left. This is the main exception to the right-hand rule.

When the tram does NOT have priority

  • when the tram is on a road with a give-way sign or STOP
  • when traffic lights or a police officer decide otherwise
  • when the tram leaves a depot or loop onto the road
  • when it turns and the markings give you priority on the main road

Tram stops without an island

If passengers get on or off in the roadway, you must stop and let them pass. Driving past a stopping tram without a platform is a serious offence and an instant exam failure.

Turning left across tram tracks

When you turn left over tracks, give way to a tram coming from the opposite direction and to one approaching from behind on your left. Do not wait on the tracks — enter only when you can leave them.
