Nobody throws a beginner into Warsaw rush hour. Here is what your first hour behind the wheel really looks like — and how to make it a calm one.
The first lesson triggers more anxiety than the exam itself. Students most often fear stalling in front of the instructor or being sent straight into traffic. Neither is a problem — here is how the hour actually unfolds at our school.
Before you move: setting up the cockpit
The first fifteen minutes happen in a parked car. You adjust the seat, headrest, wheel and mirrors, and go through the pedals, gear stick, handbrake and dashboard lights. This is the same drill you will repeat at the state exam, where the vehicle check is part of the test.
The training yard: moving and stopping
Then you drive on a closed yard: pulling away, stopping, clutch control, first and second gear, gentle turns. Stalling here is completely normal and surprises nobody — the instructor has dual pedals, so safety is covered at all times.
When you enter real traffic
Usually on the second or third lesson, starting with quiet residential streets. The exam routes of WORD Bemowo and Odlewnicza appear in the second half of the course, once the basic actions are automatic. There is no fixed clock — your instructor reads your progress.
How to prepare
- sleep well and eat something light — tiredness hurts focus more than inexperience
- wear flat, thin-soled shoes
- bring your glasses if they are on your medical certificate
- arrive 10 minutes early to start calmly
- tell the instructor openly what worries you — the pace adjusts
What you do not need to fear
Your instructor has watched hundreds of first lessons and they all look alike: tension in the opening minutes, then steadily calmer work. We do not grade, raise voices or compare students. Nervous speakers of English as a second language are especially welcome — our instructors teach in English every day.
