You can learn and take the state exam in an automatic car in Warsaw. Here is how an automatic Category B course works, step by step, and what the licence restriction means.
An automatic driving course is the calmest way to get a Category B licence in Warsaw — no clutch, no stalling at junctions, more attention for traffic. Polish law allows the entire exam on an automatic, and we provide the car for the WORD test. This guide walks through every step so you know exactly what to expect before you enrol.
The one thing to know first: the licence restriction
Pass on an automatic and your licence carries restriction code 78 — it allows you to drive automatic vehicles only. A manual licence covers both. Most new cars, electric vehicles and car-sharing fleets in Warsaw are automatic, so for many learners the restriction never matters in daily life. If you might drive an older borrowed car or rent abroad, consider a manual course instead.
Why learners choose an automatic course
- No clutch or gear changes to master — you focus fully on traffic and observation
- Lessons are calmer, which usually means fewer paid extra hours
- The exam in an automatic has a lower fail rate on the manoeuvring yard (hill starts and stalls are the most common fault on a manual)
- Perfect if you will only drive automatic or electric cars in the city
Step 1 — Get your PKK number
Every learner needs a PKK (Profil Kandydata na Kierowcę) before the first official lesson. Bring a medical certificate, a photo, your ID and proof of residence to your Warsaw district office — or apply online with a trusted profile. The PKK is usually ready in a few days. We help with the paperwork if you are unsure which office handles your address.
Step 2 — Enrol and choose automatic
Give us your PKK number and tell us you want an automatic course. You can pick the Basic, Accelerated (21 days) or Intensive (15 days) plan — the price is the same for manual or automatic. Our English-speaking instructor will contact you to schedule the first lessons, with slots available 7 days a week from 6:00 to 22:00.
Step 3 — Complete 30 hours of theory
Traffic rules, road signs, right of way, first aid and vehicle basics. We run the theory online in English, so you study when it suits you and finish at your own pace before the state theory exam.
Step 4 — Drive 30 hours in our automatic car
You start on the manoeuvring yard, then move to quiet streets and real Warsaw traffic — roundabouts, trams, bus lanes and the exam routes around your WORD centre. The car is a modern Suzuki Swift or Toyota C-HR with an automatic gearbox, the same vehicle you can use for the exam.
Step 5 — Pass the internal exam
A short theory and practical check inside the school. Passing it releases your PKK for the state exams and confirms you are ready for the WORD test.
Step 6 — Pass the theory exam at WORD
Book through info-car.pl. 32 questions, 74 points to pass, 50 PLN, available in English. The result appears on screen immediately and stays valid indefinitely. Theory is identical for manual and automatic candidates.
Step 7 — Pass the practical exam in our car
WORD centres in Warsaw provide manual cars only, so for an automatic exam you use our school car — the same car you trained in. The examiner brings their own seat; the route, tasks and scoring are identical to a manual exam. The fee is 200 PLN per attempt. If you do not pass, nothing is lost — you simply book another attempt; most learners who retake succeed with a few extra hours.
Step 8 — Collect your licence
Pay 100.50 PLN to your district office. The card is usually ready in one to two weeks and you can track it on info-car.pl. The restriction to automatics is printed on the card as code 78.
